On Earth Day 2022, let us remember that everybody wants to live a happy life. Not only human beings, but animals, birds and insects too. All of us should be concerned about our collective existence. As human beings our marvellous brains provide us with remarkable opportunities to do good, but if we look at how the world is today, we should be able to do better. We need a more holistic education, an education that incorporates inner values, such as a compassionate concern for others’ well-being.

Our world is heavily interdependent. New challenges, like the climate crisis that affect us all, as well as our participation in the global economy, mean that we must take the whole of humanity into account. We have to put the global interest first.

Students Get Educational Tour of CTA

Honourable Sikyong Mr. Penpa Tsering la with Class XII teachers and students during Educational tour 19th April 2022

21st April 2022: As a part of “Tibet Our Country” month project and an educational tour, a group of few hundred students escorted by their teachers had been visiting the Central Tibetan Secretariat from 19th April 2022. The educational tour initiated by the school head began on 19th April starting with the students and teachers of class XII and would be concluding on 29th April with the class IV students and teachers. Every day, clad in their tidy navy blue trouser and the striped shirt, they would leave Upper TCV School at 7:30 a.m. and reach the secretariat before 9 a.m. During the one day visit, the tour included visits to the three pillars of Democracy, the seven Departments, three Autonomous bodies, Library of Tibetan Work and Archives (LTWA), Tibet Museum. The students were divided into two groups and taken to various departments, where they were received and given detailed tour of the office.

Prior to the CTA tour, the students of Upper TCV School had been taken to TIPA to attend the week long Shoton festival. Around 1000 people including both the staff and students visited the Shoton festival as a part of Tibet Our Country program. There were lots of good and positive feedbacks from both the staff and students who had attended the Shoton festival. All the students had also written their personal reflection about their visit at the festival. The two visits involving a large number of students had never happened earlier. This sort of educational tour and visits provide both teachers and students the real life experience away from what they learn in schools from their textbook. Although such visits involved lots of planning, finance, time, logistics etc. yet one physical visit around the secretariat is worth thousand lectures within the four walls of the classroom. Throughout the visit, the students were seen showing lots of curiosity, interest and willingness to learn in spite of the hectic schedule. Except for the one hour lunch break, both the teachers and the students had been visiting from one place to the next place.

A group photo of class X teachers and students at Parliament during their educational tour (20th April 2022)

The main purpose of this educational visit to the Central Tibetan Administration, CTA was to give our students first hand information about the CTA and the working of the different departments, Library and museum. There was a notepad and a pen in everybody’s hand. They were expected to come up with one project on one particular section they visited. Wherever the students went, they asked questions and interacted with the staff there. The staff at various departments gave brief introduction of their departments and detailed tour around. The student seemed to enjoy the recently inaugurated Tibet museum among many others they visited at CTA. They also enjoyed the sumptuous packed lunch brought on time by the school head cook.

Students listening attentively, taking notes during their educational tour

Some of the groups were lucky enough to get an audience with the honourable Sikyong, Kalons, Directors and secretaries in their own offices and cabins. They interacted with the students lovingly and gave valuable pieces of advice. It all depended upon the availability of their time during the visit. Nevertheless, all the groups were able to follow as per the schedule except in few cases due to the shortage of time. The students were asked to visit the departments in future as well by them.

A view of Tibet Museum at Gangchen Kyishong

Overall, the visit was worth the price paid in terms of time and energy. “I really enjoyed visiting CTA today. I have never visited so many departments before. I am impressed by how they work efficiently” a class IX student said. An escort teacher said, “I saw the new museum today. It really looks like a world standard. I also saw children enjoying each and every section in the museum. I wish other schools join this initiative too in the coming days. I want to thank the school for this opportunity”. As the inmates of Dharamsala, if we are not able to explore the local resources now, it will be too late when we leave this place. Like the famous quotation, “Charity begins at Home”. Upper TCV school has laid the foundation for others to join the suit.

“All work no play, makes jack a dull boy”, true to this maxim, the school arranges lots of co-curricular activities for the students. Once the school reopened after the lockdown, a series of programs and activities were thrown at students’ disposal. The basketball tournament was held among class instead of among four houses with the hope of providing more participation. Not only that, unlike the earlier time when the tournament officials were staff members, this time the students were given the opportunity to be the table officials.

Effective Lesson Planning: He conducted the workshop in a two-way form.  He shared his research perspective while the teachers shared their field perspective. The two topics he had chosen “Effective Lesson Planning” and “Student Engagements” were very much relevant and he debunked many myths about them. He began his presentation by asking the participants about how the present education system was performing. After collecting few responses, he presented a data depicting what kind of graduates the present system had produced. He stressed on the importance of Teacher’s classroom teaching, which would decide what kind of graduates would come out. Then he let the teachers discuss and share some of the strategies for improving students’ engagement. And then, he explained some of the strategies or methods to improve students’ engagement like sense of belongingness, sense of competence, sense of autonomy and the principles of meaningfulness. Later, he spoke in details the above strategies one by one. Finally, he requested the teachers to work on developing the above four strategies in order to improve students’ engagement. That was the crux of the teaching. He said, “Rather than blaming the students for their dis engagement, the teacher should work on improving the students’ engagement”
